Planting a memory
My mother grew up on a farm in the mountains of Kentucky. This is where I first realized the hidden super powers plants can hold. I was a small child playing in the garden, two years old and still sucking my fingers. My great-grandmother was making a lot of noise at me, but words were always lost in translation between her 93 year old mouth and my two year old ears. I didn't know what she was trying to communicate as I pet all the beautiful red and orange colors in front of me. All I could think of was how pretty these shiny flowers looked in the sunlight. After a while, I had my fill of plant petting and paused to think as I put my fingers in my mouth. Then it hit me. A fiery flame of spice engulfed my mouth. It was a pain I had never felt before! My great-grandmother knew I was going to stick my fingers in my mouth after touching the shiny flowers, or should I say hot peppers. She tried to warn me, but I am glad it happened because it is the only memory I have of her. Those hot peppers caused such a burning ruckus that my long-term memory clung to, and without it, I wouldn't have this memory of my great-grandmother.
